How small is small: mature weight across the whole tier
The two smallest rabbit breeds recognised by the American Rabbit Breeders Association are the Netherland Dwarf and the Britannia Petite, both capped at 1.13 kg (2.5 lb) as adults. The small tier runs from there up to roughly 2.49 kg (5.5 lb), where the Dutch and the Tan sit — so the category spans more than a doubling of bodyweight, and a Dutch is closer in mass to a small meat rabbit than it is to a Netherland Dwarf.
ARBA draws a line of its own inside that range. Its care recommendations put nine breeds — American Fuzzy Lop, Britannia Petite, Dwarf Hotot, Himalayan, Holland Lop, Jersey Wooly, Mini Rex, Netherland Dwarf and Polish — in the smallest housing class, defined as a maximum senior weight under 2.0 kg (4.4 lb). Everything from the Mini Satin upwards falls into the next band. That 2.0 kg line is the most defensible working definition of the tier.
One caution before the numbers: a maximum senior weight is a show ceiling, not an average. It is the point above which an adult is disqualified, so well-bred animals cluster just below it, and a rabbit sold to you at 1.4 kg is not a Netherland Dwarf whatever the pedigree says.

True dwarf or simply small — the distinction most lists get wrong
Two quite different animals share this weight range. Some breeds are small because they carry a single dwarfing mutation that shortens the whole animal and rounds the skull; others are small because generations of breeders selected downwards on ordinary polygenic size variation. In a photograph they are the same category. In a nest box they are not, because only the first group loses a fixed share of every litter.
It is worth being strict about what has actually been genotyped, because most ranking pages are not. The 2017 study that identified the mutation tested peanut kits from Netherland Dwarf, Holland Lop and a long-haired dwarf breed and found every one homozygous for the deletion. It also tested forty rabbits from six breeds expected to be clear — Belgian Hare, Champagne d'Argent, Dutch, Flemish Giant, French Lop and New Zealand White — and every one was homozygous wild type. So the Dutch is documented as a small breed without the dwarfing allele. For most of the rest of the tier, nobody has published genotypes at all.
Breed names are no help either. ARBA describes the Polish as having longer ears, a non-brachycephalic head and less cobbiness than the Netherland Dwarf, and states outright that it is not a dwarf breed. Britain calls the Britannia Petite "Polish", so the same word denotes two different animals on either side of the Atlantic. And "Mini" in Mini Rex or Mini Satin marks a scaled-down version of a full-sized breed, not a genotype. Size here is largely polygenic anyway: a 2025 whole-genome study concluded that the HMGA2 deletion does not fully explain small size even in the Netherland Dwarf, and that Dwarf Lops and Netherland Dwarfs may have reached it partly by different routes.

What the dwarfing allele actually is
The dwarf allele is a deletion of about 12.1 kilobases on chromosome 4 that removes the promoter and the first three exons of HMGA2, switching the gene off. HMGA2 turns up repeatedly in body-size genetics across mammals; in rabbits, losing one working copy makes a smaller, rounder, shorter-faced animal, and losing both is fatal. OMIA classifies the trait as autosomal with incomplete dominance and gives the allele the symbol dw.
The effect on size was measured long before the DNA was. Greene's 1940 description reported that the dwarfism is visible at birth, that the homozygous form is lethal and produces a kit about a third the size of normal littermates, and that heterozygotes are about two-thirds the size of their siblings at birth and never catch up. Modern work puts adult heterozygotes typically under 1 kg, and a summary of the older literature adds a detail breeders will recognise: dwarf does tend to lay down fat if they are not bred from regularly.
A note on notation, because pedigrees and forums disagree. The scientific literature writes the non-functional allele in lower case (dw) and the normal allele as Dw, so a show dwarf is Dw/dw and a peanut is dw/dw; much fancy writing reverses the capitals. The biology is identical either way — one dose gives you the breed, two doses give you a kit that will not survive the week.

What the lethal allele does to your weaned litter size
This is the number that separates a breeder's view of small breeds from a pet buyer's. Mate two true dwarfs and Mendel gives you a quarter Dw/Dw, a half Dw/dw and a quarter dw/dw. That last quarter are peanuts: viable up to birth, so they are born alive and counted, then dead within a few days. Nothing in husbandry changes that share — it is fixed by the pairing.
Now put it against the baseline. FAO's summary of doe prolificacy by adult size gives about 4 kits born per litter for very small breeds, 5.3 for the small Himalayan, 7.5 for the New Zealand White and 8.1 for the Flemish Giant. The gradient comes from ovulation rate: a much-cited count found 3.97 ova shed by Polish does against 12.88 in the Flemish Giant, with litters at birth of 3.24 and 10.17. Small breeds start with fewer eggs, and FAO is blunt that hard selection for small size has cost them fertility and growth rate.
Stack the two effects and the arithmetic is unforgiving. Four born, one of them a peanut, leaves about three weaned from a true-dwarf pairing — against seven or more from a commercial doe. None of that gap is a reflection on the doe. A breeder who benchmarks a Netherland Dwarf herd against commercial rabbitry figures, or who moves across from meat rabbits, will read normal performance as failure and cull good does for it.
The defence is a record that separates born alive from weaned, per doe and per pairing, over enough litters for the pattern to show. Log the peanuts as peanuts rather than as generic pre-weaning mortality and the quarter appears as a flat, breed-level tax instead of a run of bad luck. False dwarfs: why serious herds keep the oversized ones
A false dwarf is a rabbit from a dwarf breed that inherited two normal copies of the gene. It is still a small rabbit — the 2017 study notes that dwarf-breed animals homozygous for the wild-type allele are normal in proportion but small compared with other breeds. What it is not is a show animal: it usually runs over the breed's maximum senior weight, with a longer face and larger ears, which is why the fancy nickname for it is unflattering.
Kept as a breeding animal it is worth more than it looks. Pair a false dwarf with a true dwarf and no peanut is genetically possible, because every kit receives a working copy from the false-dwarf parent, while half the litter still carries the dwarfing allele and can be shown. That converts an expected 25% loss into zero, at the price of losing half the litter to the show table rather than all of it. FAO also reports that ovulation potential rises on average with adult size, which is consistent with the long-standing preference for the heavier doe in a dwarf herd.
The catch is identification. You cannot reliably tell a true dwarf from a false dwarf by eye in a young rabbit: in the 2017 genotyping panel, four of twenty rabbits phenotyped as dwarf turned out to be homozygous wild type, which the authors put down to mis-phenotyping at young ages. In practice you learn it from breeding results — a buck that has produced peanuts with a known true dwarf carries the allele; one that never has across several litters probably does not. That is inference from a pedigree plus litter outcomes, which is what a pedigree tool such as RabbitBreeder can surface once peanut events are recorded against the mating instead of vanishing into a mortality total.
Teeth: what the evidence supports, and what it does not
The standard warning about tiny breeds is that the shortened, rounded dwarf skull causes malocclusion, and there is a real mechanism behind it. A geometric morphometric study of wild and pet rabbit skulls found that in pet rabbits the force-generating parts of the head — cranium and mandible — have changed shape independently of the continuously growing teeth that must resist those forces, and that this mismatch predisposes domestic rabbits to dental problems. The same authors note that selection for extremely short crania in dwarf rabbits is sometimes accompanied by very short skulls with a shortened maxillary diastema and congenital incisor malocclusion.
The largest study of actual clinical cases does not support the usual conclusion, and we would rather say so than repeat the folklore. A review of 161,979 UK rabbits in primary veterinary care found a one-year dental disease prevalence of 15.36%, 3.14% for incisors and 13.72% for cheek teeth — and neither lop-eared nor brachycephalic conformation was significantly associated with higher odds. What predicted risk was age, which raised it, and bodyweight, which lowered it: lighter rabbits had more dental disease than heavier ones.
The practical reading is that small size is a risk marker while head shape, on this evidence, is not — and that a 15% annual case rate makes dental disease a whole-species problem rather than a dwarf-breed problem. For a breeder, congenital incisor malocclusion in a kit is a heritable-defect decision to be recorded and acted on, not a treatable inconvenience. For an owner it argues for routine oral examination of any small rabbit as it ages, and a diet built to wear the teeth — indigestible long fibre provides that wear, at around 20% crude fibre for pet rabbits. Anything you actually find in the mouth belongs to your vet.
Feed and space at the small end, where the usual rules of thumb break
Feed does not scale with bodyweight; it scales with metabolic weight. The MSD Veterinary Manual gives maintenance as 70 × W^0.75 kcal per day, and FAO uses the same exponent, quoting 220–240 kcal of digestible energy per kg of W^0.75 for growing rabbits and 300 kcal for a lactating doe. So a 1.13 kg Netherland Dwarf, at a quarter the bodyweight of a 4.5 kg rabbit, needs about 35% of its maintenance energy — roughly 40% more calories per kilogram of bodyweight. Small rabbits are proportionally expensive to feed, not proportionally cheap.
The pellet rule of thumb pulls the other way, and both can be true. MSD restricts non-breeding adult pet rabbits to about a quarter of a cup of high-fibre pellets per 2.3 kg (5 lb) of bodyweight per day, chiefly to prevent obesity, since rabbits are concentrate selectors that over-eat energy-dense food given the chance. For a 1.13 kg dwarf that lands near an eighth of a cup, and at that scale a careless scoop is a large percentage error — the practical argument for weighing a small rabbit's ration instead of measuring it by volume, and for letting hay carry the intake.
Space is where intuition fails hardest. ARBA's care recommendations, following the US Animal Welfare Act, set 0.14 m² (1.5 ft²) of floor and 35.5 cm (14 in) of height for a weaned rabbit under 2.0 kg — but 0.37 m² (4.0 ft²) for a nursing doe under 2.0 kg, more floor than a solitary 4 kg rabbit is allotted. Those are regulatory minima for production and show housing. For pet rabbits the RWAF publishes one figure and does not grade it by breed: a continuous 3 m × 2 m footprint at least 1 m high for a pair of average-sized rabbits, with upper storeys and platforms explicitly not counting. A Netherland Dwarf does not qualify you for a smaller enclosure.

Choosing one: the questions that separate the tiers
If you want the smallest possible adult, you are choosing a true dwarf breed and accepting its consequences: a lethal allele in the gene pool, a naturally small litter, and lifelong attention to teeth. If you want a small rabbit without any of that, the Dutch, the Polish and the Tan sit in the same photographs and carry none of the same genetics — the Dutch is the one breed in the tier with published proof of it.
Whichever way you go, buy on measured adult weights rather than on the word in the breed name, and expect an honest breeder to know the answers below without looking them up.

What is the smallest rabbit breed?
The Netherland Dwarf and the Britannia Petite tie, both limited by ARBA to a maximum senior weight of 1.13 kg (2.5 lb). The Britannia Petite is the same breed Britain calls the Polish, which is a different animal from the breed ARBA registers as Polish — that one is capped at 1.59 kg (3.5 lb) and is explicitly not a dwarf breed. Is a Mini Rex or a Mini Lop a dwarf rabbit?

For every other breed the honest answer is that nobody has published the test, and small size in rabbits is substantially polygenic regardless.
Why did some of my dwarf kits die three days after birth?
If both parents are true dwarfs, a quarter of every litter inherits two copies of the dwarfing deletion. Those kits — fanciers call them peanuts — have a swollen head, tiny ears and pinched hindquarters, are viable up to birth, and die within a few days. It is not a nesting, milk or temperature failure, and nothing in your husbandry changes the proportion. Pairing a true dwarf with a false dwarf removes the loss entirely. Any kit death you cannot explain this way is worth a veterinary opinion.
Do small rabbit breeds have more tooth problems?
Lighter rabbits do, but not because of head shape. A study of 161,979 UK rabbits in primary veterinary care found a one-year dental disease prevalence of 15.36% and reported that the odds fell as bodyweight rose — while neither lop ears nor a brachycephalic skull was significantly associated with increased risk. On housing, ARBA's minimum is 0.14 m² (1.5 ft²) for a rabbit under 2.0 kg, but a nursing dwarf doe needs 0.37 m² (4.0 ft²), and the RWAF's pet recommendation of a continuous 3 m × 2 m area at least 1 m high is not scaled down for small breeds.
