When to put the nest box in
Put the nest box in the doe's cage on day 28, counted from the day she was mated. Pregnancy runs about 31 to 33 days, so day 28 gives her roughly three days to build a nest and leaves almost no chance of her kindling before the box arrives.
The figure is consistent across sources. The MSD Veterinary Manual puts nest boxes in the cage 28 to 29 days after breeding. Penn State Extension gives day 28 flatly. FAO's rabbitry management guidance says preparations for kindling — supervision, nest box, fresh bedding — should be made for all mated does from the 27th to the 28th day after mating. Utah State Extension frames the same window from the other end: the doe needs the box at least three days before she gives birth to trigger nesting behaviour.
Count from the mating date, not from the day you first notice her behaving oddly. Fur pulling only appears about a day before birth, so by the time you see it the box should already have been in place for two days. This is the practical reason breeders are told to write down every service date: MSU Extension's advice is to record the date of all matings precisely so that kindling preparations happen at the proper time.
What goes wrong when the box is early or late
Both errors are real, but they are not symmetrical. An early box costs you a clean nest. A late box costs you kits.
Put in too soon, the box becomes a latrine. The MSD Veterinary Manual is explicit that a box set in ahead of time ends up fouled with urine and droppings. A doe with a week of spare time treats a dark, enclosed corner as a toilet, and the bedding underneath soaks through. Wet bedding conducts heat away from newborns instead of insulating them, and it is already ammoniac by the time the litter arrives.
Put in too late, the doe has no burrow substitute at the moment she needs one. FAO's reproduction chapter notes plainly that the doe does not always make a nest, and that she may kindle outside the nesting box. On a wire floor that is close to fatal: kits are born naked, blind and deaf and cannot regulate their own body temperature until about day 7, so a litter delivered onto mesh has no functioning way to stay warm.

Nest box size by doe mature weight
A nest box has to satisfy two requirements that pull against each other. It must be large enough for the doe to enter, turn and nurse without crushing anyone, and small enough that the kits stay in one heap. The MSD Veterinary Manual frames the trade-off as roominess against warmth: nobody should be crowded, but the litter still has to hold its own heat.
Swiss animal welfare law is the one widely available source that ties nest area to doe weight in binding numbers. Annex 1, Table 8 of the Animal Welfare Ordinance sets a minimum additional nest-compartment area of 800 cm² for adult rabbits up to 2.3 kg, 1000 cm² for the 2.3–3.5 kg and 3.5–5.5 kg bands, and 1200 cm² for does over 5.5 kg. FAO's independent recommendation — a rectangular box of at least 50 × 25 × 25 cm — sits above the Swiss floor in every band, which is why working rabbitries tend to land near it regardless of breed.
The mapping below combines the two. Weights are the doe's mature weight, not her weight while pregnant.
- Doe up to 2.3 kg (5 lb), dwarf and small breeds — nest floor at least 800 cm² (124 sq in), for example 35 × 23 cm (14 × 9 in)
- Doe 2.3–3.5 kg (5–7.7 lb), small to medium breeds — at least 1000 cm² (155 sq in); the common 40 × 25 × 20 cm (16 × 10 × 8 in) box is the MSD standard for medium rabbits and fits this band exactly
- Doe 3.5–5.5 kg (7.7–12 lb), New Zealand White and Californian — 1000 cm² (155 sq in) is the legal floor, but FAO's 50 × 25 × 25 cm (20 × 10 × 10 in) is the working size
- Doe over 5.5 kg (12 lb), Flemish Giant and other giants — at least 1200 cm² (186 sq in); treat 50 × 25 cm (20 × 10 in) as the starting point and go wider rather than only longer
- Height — at least 25 cm (10 in), on the FAO recommendation
- Entrance lip — at least 8 cm (3 in), which strips off kits still clinging to the teats and stops them leaving early
- Doe access hole — about 15 cm (6 in) across, square or round, sited opposite the corner where the kits lie so she cannot land on them
- Divider, if fitted to keep the kits together — leave at least 30 × 30 cm (12 × 12 in) on the doe's side so she can nurse in comfort
Materials, drainage, ventilation and bedding
Untreated wood, fibreboard and plywood are the European default: they insulate better than metals but absorb urine and, apart from plastic, are hard to disinfect. The MSD Veterinary Manual flags rough, splintered edges as a mastitis risk every time the doe jumps in or out, so an unfinished rim is a mammary infection waiting to happen. Plastic disinfects cleanly and insulates acceptably but absorbs nothing, so drainage and bedding depth do all the work. Galvanised iron suits only a well-heated rabbitry or a warm climate, and FAO specifies a wood, plywood or plastic bottom even then — in an unheated winter shed a metal box is a heat sink pressed against newborns. Wire-mesh boxes with a swinging bottom are easy to inspect and clean, but FAO notes they demand a perfectly controlled environment because the kits are exposed.
Drainage is not optional. FAO's design brief calls for a bottom that lets urine run off: perforated, or with a 1–1.5 cm (0.4–0.6 in) gap left between the floor panel and the sides, or straw sandwiched between two layers of mesh. The bottom should be detachable so the whole interior can be cleaned, and non-skid so kits do not slip and dislocate joints. The top should carry a trapdoor so you can look in without dismantling anything. Swiss welfare guidance adds the matching ventilation requirement: nest boxes must be well ventilated so that moisture can evaporate out of them.
For bedding, FAO recommends clean straw or soft untreated wood chips, with dried grasses as an option, and states that cellulose cotton wool must never be used. Utah State Extension recommends straw, grass or wood shavings and specifically warns against sawdust. When does were offered a choice in a controlled trial, they showed a clear preference order — fine fibre bedding first, then wheat straw, then meadow hay, with wood shavings last, and most refused the box bedded with shavings altogether. Lay enough depth that the doe can hollow out a cup and still have loose material left to pull over the top, and give her material she can carry in herself rather than packing it for her.
Winter and summer nest management
The number that matters is the temperature in the middle of the nest, not the temperature of the shed. FAO's specification for a nest box is that in cold weather it keeps the kits together and helps them hold close to 30–35 °C (86–95 °F) at the centre of the nest, while in hot weather it allows the doe to scatter the nest so the kits can adapt. The same box has to do both jobs, and bedding depth is the lever you actually control.
In winter, use an insulating box material rather than metal, bed deeply, and stand the box on something solid instead of directly on the wire. Penn State Extension recommends bedding such as straw or wood shavings specifically for cold weather. Check the nest morning and evening in the first days: a kit dragged out of the box on the doe's teats is on a very short clock, because thermoregulation does not come in until around day 7. FAO's hollowed floor is the winter feature — it lets the litter pool into a single heap when the temperature falls.
In summer the failure mode reverses. FAO notes that in hot climates the top of the box can be made of wire mesh, and that the nest should let the doe spread the kits out rather than force them together. Reduce bedding, keep the fur loose rather than packed, and watch humidity as well as heat: the MSD Veterinary Manual's rule of thumb is that ambient temperature in degrees Fahrenheit plus relative humidity as a percentage should not exceed 150, with the optimal environment at 16–22 °C (61–72 °F). A fur-packed nest in a 30 °C (86 °F) shed kills kits as reliably as an open nest does in January.
What a normal kindling looks like
Most does kindle late at night or in the early morning, and it is over quickly. Utah State Extension puts the whole birth at 7 to 30 minutes; FAO gives 15 to 30 minutes depending on litter size. FAO also notes that the breeder's presence is not required — the doe should be left somewhere quiet and clean, and the useful intervention comes afterwards, not during.
The visible run-up is short. The doe pulls fur from her body and builds the nest a day or so before giving birth. Litter size varies enormously: FAO records anything from 1 to 20, with most litters between 3 and 12 and a commercial average of 7 to 9. MSU Extension tells breeders to expect seven or eight; Penn State gives 8 to 10 for commercial stock. Kits arrive hairless, with eyes and ears still sealed, start to show coat within a few days, and have their eyes and ears open by day 10.
Nursing looks alarming to anyone watching for the first time. The doe feeds the litter once every 24 hours, usually in the early morning, for roughly two to three minutes, then leaves them alone. A doe sitting at the far end of the cage all day is behaving normally, not neglecting her litter — this is the ancestral pattern of a wild doe who blocks the burrow and walks away after feeding.
Leave the box in place for at least two weeks so the kits' motor coordination and heat regulation can develop; FAO also recommends an entrance ledge high enough to stop them leaving before day 15. Penn State's practical window for removing the box is 5 to 21 days after birth, at the later end for winter litters.
Checking the litter in the first 24 hours
Check the nest as soon as you reasonably can after kindling. FAO is unambiguous that this is easy and carries no risk to the kits, and that it can be done immediately after birth provided the doe is taken out of the cage first. Remove any dead kits, and any foetal sacs the doe has not eaten. Penn State Extension frames the same task as a 48-hour job: observe and count the kits, removing any dead animals.
The mechanics matter more than the timing. Lift the doe out or occupy her with feed at the far end, warm your hands, open the trapdoor rather than dismantling the box, part the fur, count live and dead, then close the fur back over the heap and return her. Keep it short and make it routine at the same time each day. The reason for the routine is not that handling contaminates the kits — the peer-reviewed work links rejection and cannibalism to failed nest building and to inexperience, not to human scent — but that abrupt novelty is a genuine trigger. Mississippi State Extension lists does becoming excited by an environmental change as a cause of cannibalism, so a calm, predictable check is safer than an occasional dramatic one.
Write the numbers down while the box is open. FAO's own justification is arithmetic: nests must be inspected daily and dead kits removed, because mortality between birth and weaning still runs at around 20 percent in European rabbitries and getting below 12 percent is very difficult, while the housing chapter puts pre-weaning losses at 15 to 40 percent of liveborn kits. No rabbitry can tell a 12 percent doe from a 35 percent doe by memory. Kindling on the wire, scattered litters and cannibalism
These failures have been quantified. A study of 91 litters from cage-bred wild does recorded straw never being carried into the nest box in 41.8 percent of births, no fur lining in 28.6 percent, one or more kits born outside the box in 18.7 percent, and cannibalism in 13.2 percent. Those rates run higher than domestic stock because the animals were wild rabbits kept in cages, but the modelling is what transfers: the factors separating successful from failed births were the presence of fur in the nest box, where the kits were actually born, and whether the doe was primiparous or multiparous.
Cannibalism is the failure most often blamed on temperament, and the evidence does not support that reading. A companion study of 98 kindlings found that in 84.6 percent of births where kits were eaten the doe had put no fur in the box, in 92.3 percent she had carried in no straw, and 53.8 percent of those does kindled outside the box entirely. The authors interpret cannibalism as a symptom of maternal behaviour failing under the stress of captivity, and note it was confined to the peripartum period. The same paper sets published rates in domestic rabbits at 8 to 15 percent of litters in older work against just 0.5 percent recorded on well-run Swiss farms — a spread that management, not genetics, accounts for.
Fur-pulling failure and scattered litters cluster in first litters for the same underlying reason. In the 2010 modelling, the highest-mortality behaviour type corresponded to primiparous does of parity one and two, with high numbers born and high numbers stillborn. A doe who does not line the nest is not being difficult; she has not assembled the behaviour yet. The response is to remove the obstacles — give her hay or straw she can pick up and carry in herself, site the box away from her feeding and resting corner, keep her from jumping onto the box roof, and give her a second litter before writing her off.
- Water restricted, or too warm to drink in hot weather

Fostering kits onto another doe
Fostering is governed by three limits, all of them from FAO: give a foster mother no more than three extra kits, keep the age difference between her own litter and the incomers under 48 hours, and complete the move within five days of kindling. Utah State Extension adds a ceiling on the other side — no more than two litters should be fostered onto a single doe.
The 48-hour rule is what makes fostering a scheduling decision rather than a rescue. You cannot conjure a doe with a two-day-old litter on the morning you need one. MSU Extension's answer is to mate several does on the same day or within a few days of one another, so that kindling falls at about the same time, 28 to 32 days later, which is precisely what makes fostering possible if it becomes necessary. Synchronised matings are cheap insurance against a doe dying, refusing to nurse, or delivering fourteen kits onto eight nipples.
The move itself is quick. Take the recipient doe out, open the trapdoor, and settle the incoming kits into the middle of her existing heap under her own fur rather than laying them on top. FAO explicitly lists introducing kits to be fostered among the things a nest box must let the producer do without disturbing the doe and the rest of the litter, which is another argument for a box with a proper inspection hatch. Check again within 24 hours: because the doe feeds only once a day, a foster kit that has missed a feed is visibly flat-bellied next to its round littermates and can be moved again before it fades.

Why did my doe eat her kits?
Almost always because nest building failed, not because of temperament. In a study of 98 kindlings, does that ate kits had put no fur in the box in 84.6 percent of cases and no straw in 92.3 percent, and 53.8 percent had kindled outside the box altogether; the authors read it as maternal behaviour breaking down under stress.
