Which rabbits are lop-eared, and why the ear actually falls
Five lop breeds are recognised by the American Rabbit Breeders Association: the Holland Lop, Mini Lop, French Lop, English Lop and American Fuzzy Lop. In Britain the group is large enough that the British Rabbit Council gives lops one of the four sections of the Fancy, from the small Mini Lop to the historic English Lop. Anything else sold as a lop — the Mini Plush Lop among them — is a developing type with no national standard.
The ear does not hang because it is long or heavy. It hangs because of the crown: a basal ridge of cartilage across the top of the skull that fixes the angle at which the ear leaves the head. An ARBA judge writing for the Holland Lop Rabbit Specialty Club describes a ridge, not a socket, wrapping from behind one eye over the head and down behind the other, so the ear exits already pointing downwards. Side-to-side width turns the ear down; front-to-back depth, target 25 mm (1 in), decides whether it leaves flat and wide or rolled like a tube.
Under the skin the difference is a break in a chain. A wild-type rabbit carries an erect, mobile pinna supported by three interdigitating auricular cartilages that scaffold the vertical ear canal. Lop breeds have three to five millimetres of soft tissue between the proximal acoustic meatus cartilage ring and the tragal cartilage, and the pinna folds at exactly that gap. A lop ear is not floppy; it is jointed.
That explains the inheritance, which surprises people expecting a single gene. Ear carriage has been treated as a heritable, quantitative character since Castle and Reed's crossing experiments in the 1930s, and what is inherited is the crown, whose width and depth vary continuously rather than switching on or off. Two lopped parents can therefore produce kits whose crowns are too narrow to carry an ear below horizontal — which is why the standard needs a disqualification for that fault at all.
Ear set: what is really known about when a lop's ears drop
No published study has measured the age at which lop kits' ears come down. The figures that circulate — four weeks, six weeks, ten weeks, six months, two years — are breeder observation, and they disagree because none comes from a controlled series. What is documented is the mechanism, and it tells you what to look at and when the question stops being open.
First, carriage follows the crown, not the ear. The HLRSC's judging guidance is blunt: if a Holland shows ear control, the crown is responsible. A crown too narrow side to side leaves the ear pointing outward instead of down, in bad cases above horizontal; one too shallow front to back gives a small ear opening and a tube-shaped ear base. Side-to-side width is also the first crown dimension to develop, so the crown is readable long before the ears settle.
Second, the cartilage hardens. In a rabbit model comparing auricular cartilage from newborn through five days, fifteen days, two months and six months, elastic fibre and matrix accumulated steadily, immature ears deformed more readily and held the deformation longer, and stiffness was significantly higher in mature cartilage. Carriage therefore does not flip on a date; it stops being negotiable gradually as the pinna's elastic cartilage stiffens, which makes late changes rare rather than impossible.
The practical deadline of six months is institutional rather than biological: ARBA registration requires an animal at least six months old meeting every senior requirement, and ears above horizontal are a general disqualification across the lop breeds. One ear up is not a modern accident either — the Lop Rabbit Club of America records that Victorian fanciers showed Half Lops, with a single lopped ear, and Horn Lops with twisted ears, as varieties in their own right. The phenotype is old and structural; today it is a fault instead of a class.
Because carriage is a crown trait and the crown behaves quantitatively, the informative data is never one kit but the pattern across a pairing's litters. Recording crown width and ear set for every kit at each weigh-in — in a litter log such as RabbitBreeder's — shows which buck and doe combinations actually throw crowns that carry the ear.

What the standards ask for, and the disqualification every lop breeder meets
The ARBA Standard of Perfection carries a general disqualification for lop-eared rabbits whose ears are carried above horizontal, and the Holland Lop standard adds that ear control is faulted heavily. Judges are told to let an excitable animal relax first: the muscles at the ear base evolved to rotate the pinna, and lop breeding did not remove them.
For type, the Holland Lop Rabbit Specialty Club asks for a strongly defined crown — a ridge that appears to sit on top of the head, with excellent width front to back and side to side and good depth of cartilage and fur — and for thick, wide, well-furred ears with rounded, teaspoon-shaped tips hanging close to the cheeks.
A recurring fault is the so-called slipped crown, sitting too far back on the head. The judge who wrote the club's crown article calls this a misdiagnosis: what looks like a crown in the wrong place is usually a crown with too little front-to-back depth. The distinction matters, because you cannot breed a crown forward but you can breed it deeper.

Lop breeds compared: size, status and what each one is for
The honest axis for comparing lops is mature weight: it is what the standards fix and what drives housing, handling and cost. Ear length is not comparable, because neither the ARBA's public breed pages nor the British Rabbit Council's public site publish per-breed ear-length minima. Where a breed has no maximum weight, that is the standard's wording, not an omission.
Litter size splits along the same axis. FAO groups breeds by adult size and notes a positive correlation between size and prolificacy, citing a Flemish Giant average of 8.1 live-born against 4.0 in a small breed. Expect the giant lops to out-produce the dwarf lops — but a dwarf lop is selected on head, crown and ear, not on litter size.
One naming trap wrecks a lot of cross-border buying. "Mini Lop" is not the same animal in North America and Britain: the ARBA Mini Lop reaches 2.95 kg (6.5 lb), while British registries use Mini or Miniature Lop for their smallest lop. It is also Britain's commonest lop — in a 2023–24 survey of 435 pedigree rabbits at British Rabbit Council shows and studs, the Miniature Lop was the most numerous breed, 71 rabbits or 16.3 per cent.
- Holland Lop — ARBA-recognised 1979, maximum 1.81 kg (4 lb). Bred by Adriaan de Cock in the Netherlands as a dwarfed alternative to the French Lop; compact body, large head, short thick ears, one of the ARBA's five most popular breeds.
- Mini Lop — ARBA-recognised 1980, maximum 2.95 kg (6.5 lb). Reached the US in the 1970s as the German Klein Widder; stocky and compact, roughly half again a Holland Lop's weight.
- American Fuzzy Lop — ARBA-recognised 1989, maximum 1.81 kg (4 lb). Holland Lop structure with a wooled coat; the same crown rules apply, plus weekly grooming.
- Mini Plush Lop — not an ARBA-recognised breed. A developing American type: no national standard, no registration, no show classes.
- French Lop — no maximum weight in the ARBA standard; a typical adult reaches 5–6 kg (11–13 lb). Created in France around 1850 from English Lop crossed with the Butterfly rabbit; FAO classes it among the heavy breeds above 5 kg.
- English Lop — no maximum senior weight; typical adult about 5 kg (11 lb). The original lopped rabbit, with the longest ears of any breed, traced to about 1700 and exhibited in Britain by 1846.
The giant and large lops: French Lop and English Lop
The two big lops belong to a different management class. FAO puts the French Lop in the heavy group, above 5 kg, alongside the Flemish Giant and the Giant Papillon; veterinary breed guidance gives a typical French Lop 5–6 kg (11–13 lb) and an English Lop about 5 kg (11 lb). At that size a rabbit needs floor area on a different scale, and its back is fragile enough to make it a poor match for small children.
Size interacts with the ear problem rather than escaping it. In the RVC's field study of 435 pedigree rabbits, heavier breeds carried higher risks of several ear abnormalities — redness, canal narrowing, flaky discharge and traumatic changes to the pinna — and reacted more strongly to examination. The English Lop adds an exposure no other breed shares: ears long enough for the rabbit to tread on them, which the 2019 study flagged as an increased risk of pinna trauma. That means floor area rather than height, a low food bowl, and no doorway or ramp edge that drags the ears.
There is a thermal side too: FAO describes the rabbit ear as a radiator, lowering ear temperature below about 10 °C to conserve heat and raising it above 25–30 °C to shed heat. A very large ear surface is an asset in heat and a liability in cold and draught.
What the fold does to the ear canal
Start from the geometry. The wild-type rabbit ear is a straight tube, its vertical canal scaffolded by three interdigitating auricular cartilages; in lop breeds soft tissue replaces cartilage between the meatus ring and the tragal cartilage, and the pinna folds there. The Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund's veterinary advisor likens the result to folding a cardboard tube in half: the canal narrows, airflow drops and anything inside drains out less easily. Because the cartilage hoops are separated at the fold, waxy material can also push out between them under the skin and spread around delicate structures of the head.
That prediction has now been tested at scale. Between October 2023 and February 2024, Royal Veterinary College researchers examined 435 breeder-volunteered pedigree rabbits from 49 breeds at British Rabbit Council shows and studs — animals not presented as sick. Lops had higher scores or odds for nine of eleven ear abnormalities, including abnormal canal colour and ear canal stenosis (both P<0.001), several types of aural discharge (all P≤0.035) and reactivity to examination (P=0.050). Brachycephalic rabbits had narrower canals, but the authors concluded brachycephaly matters less in otitis externa than often assumed: it is ear shape doing the work, not face shape.
The smaller 2019 rescue study pointed the same way with larger effect sizes: roughly forty-three times the odds of a stenotic ear canal (OR 42.7, 95% CI 4.2–434, P=0.002) and about fifteen times the odds of a pain response during examination (OR 14.8, P=0.043). Fourteen of fifteen lops had a health-check record of excess wax against three of fifteen erect-eared rabbits, and nine needed repeated ear cleaning, against none.
Be precise about what this is not: it is not a mite problem. A single mite was recovered from the whole 2019 sample — one Psoroptes cuniculi, in an erect-eared rabbit with no clinical signs — and Malassezia yeast counts did not differ by ear type. The extra wax reflects a failure to expel it, driven by anatomy, not an overgrowth of organisms; ear mites are a separate, contagious condition that infests erect ears just as readily. And all of this is hidden: otitis externa is inflammation of the external canal, redness, narrowing and discharge are what it looks like early, rabbits are poor at showing pain, and diagnosis needs an otoscope in a veterinarian's hands.

- Lethargy, withdrawal, aggression or any change of temperament
- Discharge, crusting or an odour at the base of the ear
- Head tilt, loss of balance or circling — see a vet the same day
- No signs at all: most of what these studies found needed an otoscope
The dental claim: what replicated and what did not
You will read everywhere that lop-eared rabbits have worse teeth, and the claim has a real source. The 2019 rescue study reported about twenty-three times the odds of incisor pathology (OR 23.3, P=0.015), twelve times the odds of molar overgrowth and thirteen times the odds of molar sharpness, with molar spurs in eleven of fifteen lops against none of the fifteen erect-eared rabbits.
The same group then went back with a much larger, non-clinical sample — the 435 pedigree rabbits, 169 lop-eared and 266 erect-eared — and the dental finding did not replicate. Lop conformation showed no increased odds of dental abnormality, and brachycephaly showed none either. Spurs proved rare, 15 rabbits or 3.45 per cent; incisor abnormalities appeared in 28.97 per cent and cheek-teeth abnormalities in 31.72 per cent, without regard to ear type. One lop association survived: four times the odds of ocular discharge (OR 4.034, P=0.007).
The authors concluded that conformation appears less important than husbandry for preventing rabbit dental disease. Together the two studies give a more precise message than either the marketing or the campaigning version: the ear finding replicated and strengthened when the sample grew twelve-fold and stopped coming from a rescue, while the dental finding disappeared. Buy a lop expecting to manage ears; feed any rabbit expecting to manage teeth. Both are husbandry, not luck.
Choosing a lop: pet, show, or the French Lop's marginal meat case
As a pet, the position of the UK's rabbit welfare charity is unambiguous: avoid buying baby lop-eared rabbits, do not support breeding them, adopt instead. If you already have one, both the charity and the RVC team advise an otoscopic ear examination at every routine check, even when the rabbit seems fine. For anyone who does breed, the study's most actionable line is a selection rule: do not breed from rabbits showing ear canal redness, crusting, bleeding or early narrowing, or whose parents showed it.
For showing, the Holland Lop is the obvious entry point and one of the ARBA's five most popular breeds, which means deep classes and hard competition. The administrative side is where beginners lose time: registration needs an animal of at least six months meeting every senior requirement, plus a complete three-generation pedigree carrying name, ear number, variety and weight for each ancestor. That is a record-keeping problem before it is a rabbit problem, which is why a herdbook such as RabbitBreeder's pedigree module earns its keep.
The meat case is genuinely marginal. FAO's description notes that the French Lop's body build would make it a good meat rabbit, but that it is bred for show, and that heavy breeds' growth potential is best exploited in crossbreeding rather than as a pure line. No commercial programme runs on lops: late maturity, high maintenance per doe, and selection pressure spent on head and crown rather than carcass.

It may, and it may not, and nobody can give you odds from a single animal because nobody has measured them. The structural reading is that a single raised ear points to a crown that is narrow or shallow on that side, and the crown is what would have to change, not the ear. The phenotype is old enough to have had a name: Victorian fanciers showed Half Lops, with one lopped ear, as a variety in their own right. Today it is simply a fault, so a permanently half-lopped rabbit is a pet rather than a show animal, and is otherwise healthy.
Which is the biggest lop-eared rabbit breed?
The French Lop. Neither the French nor the English Lop has a maximum senior weight in the ARBA standard, but the French Lop is the heavier in practice, with a typical adult at 5–6 kg (11–13 lb) against about 5 kg (11 lb) for the English Lop, and FAO classes it among the heavy breeds whose adult weight exceeds 5 kg.
