Angora Rabbit Breeds Compared: Which Wool Breed to Keep, and Why the Published Yields Disagree

ARBA recognises four Angora breeds — English, French, Giant and Satin. The German Angora is a real fifth Angora, but it is registered by IAGARB rather than recognised by ARBA, and that distinction is exactly where most wool-yield comparisons go wrong. This guide sets the five side by side on weight, coat structure and harvest method, then does what no breed page does: it reconciles the wildly different annual yields in print, from a 594 g research mean to IAGARB's 1,300 g registration projection, and shows which of them could describe a rabbit you actually own.

How many Angora rabbit breeds are there?

The American Rabbit Breeders Association recognises four Angora breeds: English, French, Giant and Satin. A fifth Angora exists and is genuinely registered — the German Angora, held to a written standard by the International Association of German Angora Rabbit Breeders — but IAGARB is not ARBA, and IAGARB's own account of its history explains that the animal ARBA eventually accepted was renamed and given a different standard. Four recognised breeds, five Angoras you can buy: both halves of that sentence matter.

"Angora" is a fibre word before it is a breed word. FAO's rabbit handbook records that angora carries the ISO symbol WA and is one of five keratin textile fibres of animal origin with real commercial weight, alongside sheep wool, mohair, cashmere and alpaca; each of the four minor fibres moves somewhere between 5,000 and 30,000 tonnes a year against more than 1.3 million tonnes of sheep wool. The coat itself is not structurally exotic. It carries the same guide hairs, guard hairs and down as any rabbit, simply grown far longer — around 10–11 cm, 8 cm and 6 cm respectively.

That length has a documented genetic basis. A 2023 BMC Genomics study linked the long-hair trait in Angora rabbits to a homozygous missense change in FGF5 (T19234C, p.L191S) that weakens the protein's binding to its receptor FGFR1. It is a useful corrective to photographs: long hair is a trait, not a pedigree, and a fluffy rabbit on a marketplace listing proves nothing about which of the five populations it came from.

Why the published wool-yield figures disagree

Search for an Angora yield figure and you will be handed numbers between roughly 250 g and 2,232 g a year, often on the same page and usually with no indication of what was measured. Most of them are not wrong. They disagree because they answer different questions: a registration pass mark, a research population mean, a national commercial estimate and a world record are four different objects, and only one of them describes an ordinary rabbit.

The most quoted figure, 1,300 g a year, is a threshold. IAGARB's testing scheme requires at least 325 g from a 90-day coat and multiplies that total by four to project the year; the rabbit must also score at least 80 points on body type, wool quality and condition before it registers. Clearing that bar is by definition above-average performance, so quoting it as what an Angora produces inverts its meaning.

The largest published measurement sits far below it. Across 588 German Angoras, the least-squares mean annual yield was 594.22 ± 67.13 g, and year and season of birth significantly affected the first, third and fourth clips as well as the annual total. Laid out by what each number actually measures, the contradiction dissolves.

  • 325 g from a 90-day coat, projected to 1,300 g a year — IAGARB's registration threshold, granted only alongside a minimum 80-point evaluation. A pass mark, not an average.
  • 594.22 ± 67.13 g a year — least-squares mean across 588 German Angoras, with significant year and season-of-birth effects. A population mean, not a target.
  • About 1,000 g for an adult doe against 700–800 g for a buck — FAO's figures for selected European stock. Same herd, different sex.
  • 650 g in the first production year against about 1,000 g at maturity — the same FAO source and the same animals, one year apart.
  • 885 g rising to 1,086 g a year at INRA between 1980 and 1986, and 400 g to 1,350 g at Neu-Ulrichstein between 1945 and 1986 — phenotypic gains near 31–32 g a year, so the decade a figure was recorded in matters.
  • 261 g to 815.7 g a year across Chinese strains, and 422–820 g for German-origin stock kept under Chinese conditions — comparable genotypes, different management.
  • 250 g at the start of German selection against a 2,232 g world record in 1990 — the two tails of the distribution, quoted as if they were its middle.

What actually moves the clip weight

Once a figure's provenance is visible, the variation stops looking random. FAO's chapter on angora production quantifies most of it, and almost none of the variation is attributable to an ARBA breed name. The drivers are sex, age, reproductive state, season, interval and harvest method.

Sex is worth about 20% in the French strain, where bucks clip less; in German stock the reported gap runs from zero to 15%, with 10% most often cited. Age matters more than most comparison tables admit. In French strains the first four collections deliver roughly 11%, 60%, 81% and 93% of adult production, and top-quality fibre only appears from the third collection at around nine months of age. German lines mature earlier, reaching full output at the third or fourth clip.

Breeding costs fibre: gestation and especially lactation cut hair production by about a third, which is why dedicated hair units keep does as long as they can and hold reproduction to a minimum. Season adds a further 4–30% between winter and summer clips depending on which study you read, with the effect weakest in the highest-yielding strains. And the interval between collections is the single largest influence on the weight of any one harvest, although it largely cancels itself out across a full year.

None of that can be reconstructed from memory at the end of a season. Recording each clip against the animal's age, clip number, parity, season and method — the sort of per-rabbit history a rabbitry system such as RabbitBreeder is built to hold — is what turns a shelf of bagged fibre into a selection decision rather than a guess.

  • Sex — bucks clip roughly 20% less in French strains, and 0–15% less (10% most often cited) in German ones.
  • Collection number — the first four French-strain clips reach about 11%, 60%, 81% and 93% of adult output.
  • Reproduction — gestation and, above all, lactation reduce hair production by about a third.
  • Season — winter clips run 4–30% heavier than summer clips, with the smallest effect in the most productive strains.
  • Interval — the dominant driver of any single clip weight, and largely self-cancelling across a year.
  • Method — shearing a French-strain doe bred for depilation costs about 30% of her adult productivity.

Raw clipped mass is not usable spinning fibre

Our own English Angora profile declines to publish a universal harvest number, and that restraint holds for a second reason as well: even an honestly weighed clip is not the figure that decides what the coat is worth. What a spinner or a buyer pays for is clean fibre of adequate staple, and a substantial fraction of any coat is not that.

FAO's grading scheme is explicit about the split. First-quality hair — clean, with down over 6 cm — accounts for about 70% of the coat. Second-quality fibre, grown on the belly and extremities and either shorter than 6 cm or too woolly, is worth roughly 20% less. Clean but felted hair from the necks of does and breeding animals is worth only about 15% of first-quality value, and dirty hair of any length is close to worthless, at best 5–6% of the first-quality price.

One consolation is that angora needs no scouring. The coat is about 98.5% pure, because rabbit skin secretions are limited to the sebaceous glands and the animal grooms itself constantly; a sheep fleece is only about 50% pure by comparison, so angora goes straight to the card. The price of that advantage is that cleanliness has to be maintained on the living animal, because it cannot be washed in afterwards. IAGARB's test procedure follows the same logic: the shorn coat is graded prime, second or third and weighed by grade, and the rabbit itself is weighed before and after shearing.

This is why a single "wool per year" column is the wrong shape for the data. Log clip weight by grade, with date, interval and method, for each animal separately; RabbitBreeder's per-rabbit records and breeding calendar carry that structure, and after two or three cycles the real differences between your own animals become visible without reference to anybody's published average.

  • First quality — clean, down over 6 cm, about 70% of the coat.
  • Second quality — belly and extremities, under 6 cm or too woolly, worth roughly 20% less.
  • Felted neck wool from does and breeding animals — clean but worth only about 15% of first-quality value.
  • Dirty wool of any length — near-worthless, at best 5–6% of the first-quality price.

How the coat decides the harvest method

The choice between shearing and plucking is not a matter of taste, and it is not settled by the breed name on the pedigree. ARBA states plainly that the Giant Angora does not moult and that its coat must therefore be shorn: the fibre will not release on its own, so there is nothing to pluck and any attempt to pluck it is simply pulling on attached hair.

IAGARB takes the opposite position for its own population, and takes it categorically: no wool is plucked, ever, and fibre sold through its members is described as gently and humanely shorn on a recommended 90-day schedule. FAO frames the same split as a genotype question rather than a policy one — French-type angora is better collected by depilation, while shearing or scissors suit German and Chinese types, because the strains differ in how synchronously their follicles restart growth after each collection method.

Getting it backwards is expensive as well as unkind. FAO reports that shearing a French-strain doe selected for depilation reduces her adult productivity by about 30%. Match the method to the animal's breeding history rather than to the video you last watched; and where the coat does not release at all, shearing is the only humane option regardless of what the breed is called.

  • A coat that does not moult must be shorn — ARBA's rule for the Giant Angora, and the reason plucking is not an option there.
  • A coat sheared on schedule — IAGARB's German Angora practice: gently shorn about every 90 days, never plucked.
  • A coat bred for depilation — FAO's French-type strains, where switching to shearing costs about 30% of adult yield.

How long the coat takes to grow

An Angora coat is not a permanently growing coat. It is an ordinary coat with an abnormally long growth phase. FAO puts the active phase of the Angora hair follicle at roughly 14 weeks against about five weeks in a short-haired rabbit, at the same rate of growth; the fibre ends up long because the follicle stays switched on nearly three times as long, not because it grows faster.

That single fact explains where harvest intervals cluster. FAO's guidance is to collect every 90 to 100 days, once the follicles reach the resting stage but before the hair starts to fall and felt, since felting is what destroys the grade. IAGARB recommends a 90-day shearing schedule for German Angoras. MSD's owner guidance describes the same cycle from the pet side, noting that rabbits generally shed about every three months with alternating light and heavy moults.

Grooming frequency follows from coat structure rather than from the calendar. MSD advises daily grooming for long-furred rabbits against at least twice weekly for short-furred ones, and the specialty standard for the English Angora asks for wool that is alive, healthy and fall-free, with enough guard hair present to support the crimped underwool. A coat carrying too little guard hair mats faster and costs more labour whatever the breed. Note that none of the cited standards assigns a breed-specific cycle length in weeks: the 14-week growth phase and the 90–100-day interval are properties of the Angora coat, not of any one registry's breed.

The five Angoras side by side

The weights below come from the registry that governs each breed, and they are not interchangeable. ARBA publishes maximums; the National Angora Rabbit Breeders Club publishes minimums, ranges and ideals; France's FFC publishes an ideal band for its Angora Français; IAGARB publishes an average with a minimum and a top figure. Comparing an ARBA maximum against an FFC ideal produces a ranking that means nothing.

Three structural facts separate them once the weights are set aside. The Giant is the only Angora with a stated no-moult, must-shear rule and the only six-class breed of the five. The English is the only compact-type Angora and the smallest. And only one of the five — the German — sits behind a registry-linked wool performance test, which is precisely why so many of the circulating yield figures are really German Angora figures wearing someone else's breed name.

  • English Angora — ARBA maximum 3.40 kg (7.5 lb) and the only compact-type Angora; NARBC gives senior minimums of 2.27 kg (5 lb) and maximums of 3.18 kg (7 lb) for bucks and 3.40 kg (7.5 lb) for does, with 57 of 100 show points on the wool. Heaviest facial furnishing of the five, and the highest grooming load.
  • French Angora — ARBA maximum 4.76 kg (10.5 lb), described by ARBA as docile and increasingly popular; the FFC's Angora Français is a separate standard, first approved on 20 June 1924, origin Savoie, ideal 4.00–5.25 kg. A clean face, and the type FAO associates with collection by depilation.
  • German Angora — not an ARBA breed. IAGARB's standard gives 3.5 kg average, 2.5 kg minimum and a 5 kg top, an ideal 6.35 cm wool staple judged in the staple, and undercoat, awn fluff and guard hair as the three fibre types. Sheared roughly every 90 days, never plucked, and the only Angora with a registration wool test.
  • Giant Angora — ARBA's largest Angora, developed specifically as a wool producer, with no maximum show weight; NARBC lists senior minimums of 4.31 kg (9.5 lb) for bucks and 4.54 kg (10 lb) for does and calls it the only six-class Angora. Three fibre types: underwool, awn fluff and awn hair. Does not moult; must be shorn.
  • Satin Angora — ARBA-recognised in 1987, commercial type, maximum 4.31 kg (9.5 lb); NARBC gives seniors 2.95–4.31 kg (6.5–9.5 lb) with 3.63 kg (8 lb) ideal. Its hallmark is a finer, clearer hair shaft that reflects light as sheen, which ARBA describes as among the most valuable of all wool.

Wool-bearing breeds that are not Angoras

Several ARBA breeds carry wool without being Angoras, and the distinction is not pedantry, because none of them is a fibre animal. A Lionhead, recognised in 2014, carries wool only as a mane and tops out at 1.70 kg (3.75 lb). A Jersey Wooly was bred deliberately to be a small pet with wool that was easy to care for and is capped at 1.59 kg (3.5 lb), with 1.36 kg (3 lb) ideal. An American Fuzzy Lop, recognised in 1989, is a wooled lop with a 1.81 kg (4 lb) maximum. At those body weights, and with coats selected for showroom appearance rather than staple length and clip weight, the annual harvest is a grooming by-product rather than a crop.

Names cause more confusion than coats here. "Plush" is not "wool": the Mini Plush Lop's own working standard describes velvety rex-type fur about half an inch long and states that the breed has not been presented to ARBA, so it is neither a wool breed nor a recognised one. If the goal really is fibre, the honest answer to "what is the best rabbit for wool" is short — an Angora, and preferably one from a line that has actually been measured.

  • Lionhead — ARBA-recognised 2014, maximum 1.70 kg (3.75 lb); the wool is confined to a mane around the head.
  • Jersey Wooly — maximum 1.59 kg (3.5 lb), ideal 1.36 kg (3 lb); bred for wool that is easy to care for, not for yield.
  • American Fuzzy Lop — recognised 1989, maximum 1.81 kg (4 lb); a wooled lop judged on type, not on fleece.
  • Mini Plush Lop — not a wool breed and not ARBA-recognised: short rex-type fur about half an inch long, on a 2.04 kg (4.5 lb) working maximum.

Wool block, gut stasis and where to read more

Swallowed hair is a normal part of rabbit life, not a diagnosis. MSD explains that when gut contents keep their normal slurry consistency the hair simply passes through and leaves in the droppings, and that a high-fibre diet builds the fibre mesh that keeps contents loose enough for it to do so; trouble arises when excessive amounts accumulate and block the pylorus. Gastrointestinal stasis itself is one of the most frequent presentations in rabbits and has many causes, stress and pain among them, and rabbits often arrive already dehydrated and painful.

For an Angora that means the coat is a risk multiplier rather than the disease. Keep hay and water available without limit, keep the coat short enough and clean enough that the rabbit is not constantly ingesting its own fleece, and treat any drop in appetite or droppings as urgent rather than as a wool block that will pass on its own.
