How long is a rabbit's gestation period?

A rabbit's gestation period is 31 to 33 days. Counted from the day of mating, the working range is roughly 28 to 35 days, but almost every healthy litter arrives on day 31, 32 or 33 — the days outside that trio are the edges of the range, not ordinary variation.

The published figures agree more than they disagree. Penn State Extension puts the average at 31 to 32 days. Utah State Extension describes a 28 to 33 day spread across breed sizes, with lighter breeds toward the early end and heavier breeds toward the late one. Veterinary references settle on 31 to 33. Measured rather than estimated, a herd study of broiler rabbits recorded a mean gestation of 31.68 days.

That tightness makes rabbits straightforward to breed and unforgiving to guess at. A cow gives you a month of margin; a doe gives you about seventy-two hours. Miss the window and the nest box is not in the cage when the kits arrive, which on a wire floor is usually fatal to the litter. Everything below is about hitting those three days.

What decides whether a doe kindles on day 31 or day 33

Gestation length is a trait, not a constant, and four factors account for most of the variation you will see in a herd. None of them is under your control on the day of kindling, which is why breeders plan for the window rather than for a date.

The practical consequence is that individual does are far more predictable than the species. A doe who kindled on day 32 for her first two litters will very likely kindle on day 32 again, because the same breed, the same body size and roughly the same litter size are still in play. Once you have two or three kindlings recorded per doe, you are no longer working with a three-day window but with her personal number, and the herd average matters much less.

Breed size is the coarsest predictor and the easiest to apply. The same size gradient runs through breeding age: Michigan State Extension advises breeding small breeds at 4 to 5 months, mediums such as the New Zealand White and the Californian at 6 to 7 months, and giants such as the Flemish Giant at seven months at the earliest.

  • Breed size — lighter breeds tend toward the early end of the 28 to 33 day span, heavier breeds toward the late end.
  • Litter size — does carrying four kits or fewer tend to run longer than does carrying eight or ten; a small litter has less to push.
  • Parity — measured gestation length barely moves with parity, ranging from 31.5 to 31.9 days across parities with no significant difference. What parity really changes is behaviour: first-litter does are nervier, build poorer nests and lose more kits.
  • Season — season had no significant effect on gestation length in the same herd study, but it strongly affects whether a doe conceives at all. Receptivity and conception rates are higher in spring; summer heat raises embryonic mortality, so a summer mating more often produces a false pregnancy or a small litter than a long gestation.

Counting the days: the gestation chart

Day 1 is whichever day you decide to count from — the only thing that matters is that you count the same way every time. The convention used in extension breeding schedules is to call the mating date day 0 and the kindling date day 31, meaning 31 calendar days after the service. If you prefer to call the mating day "day 1", then kindling falls on day 32 by your numbering, on exactly the same calendar date. Pick one convention and never mix them, because a one-day offset is the difference between a nest box that is ready and a litter born on wire.

Record the date of the actual service, not the date you introduced the pair. Take the doe to the buck's cage rather than the reverse — a doe defends her own cage and often will not lift. If nothing happens within a few minutes, take her back and try a different buck or try again the next day. Leaving a pair together for an hour to sort it out is exactly how you end up with a litter and no idea which day to count from. The whole cycle, counted from the mating date, looks like this:

  • Day 0 — mating. Record the date, the doe and the buck.
  • Days 10–14 — palpation window. Day 12 is the usual choice; by day 14 the embryos are marble-sized and easy to find, and after that they become hard to distinguish.
  • Day 15 — rebreed any doe that palpated empty instead of waiting out the full cycle.
  • Day 28 — nest box in, filled about two thirds with clean hay or straw.
  • Days 31–33 — expected kindling. Check the nest within 48 hours, count live and dead kits, remove the dead.
  • Day 32 with no kits — veterinary call.
  • Days 28–56 — weaning, depending on the system: about 28 to 32 days on an intensive schedule, 42 to 55 days on a relaxed one.
  • Days 14–42 after kindling — rebreeding window; a 35-day interval is the common compromise.

Keeping thirty does on the same calendar

None of that arithmetic is difficult. It becomes difficult at scale, when thirty does have staggered mating dates, three were rebred after palpating empty, and two lost litters and went back to the buck three days later. The schedule stops being a chart on the wall and becomes thirty independent countdowns, each with four dates attached.

Palpation: confirming the pregnancy at days 10 to 14

Palpation is the only reliable way to know a doe is pregnant before the nest box goes in, and the window is narrow. Veterinary guidance points to day 12 as the best moment. Research herds palpate 11 to 12 days after insemination. Mississippi State Extension teaches the technique at day 14 and warns that waiting any longer makes the embryos progressively harder to distinguish as the abdomen fills. Days 10 to 14 is the whole opportunity.

The technique is simple and the pressure required is almost none. Set the doe on a non-slip surface facing you, steady her with one hand over the shoulders, slide the other hand under the belly just ahead of the pelvis with the thumb on one side and fingers on the other, and draw your fingers gently backwards. If she is pregnant you will feel a row of firm, evenly spaced nodules along each uterine horn — the standard description is a chain of marbles. A doe handled regularly palpates easily; a frightened doe tenses her abdomen and tells you nothing, so if she is rigid, put her down and try tomorrow.

The point of palpating is not curiosity, it is the seventeen days you save. A doe that palpates empty can go back to a buck the next day rather than holding a cage for another two and a half weeks. Across a herd that single thirty-second check is one of the largest recoverable losses in the calendar.

Day 28: when the nest box goes in

The nest box goes into the cage on day 28 — three days before the earliest realistic kindling and one day before the earliest survivable one. Penn State Extension and Mississippi State Extension both name day 28; the MSD manual gives day 28 to 29. Earlier is not safer.

A box placed on day 24 stops being a nest and becomes a litter tray. Does treat an early box as furniture: they sit in it, urinate in it and pack the bedding flat, and a soiled damp nest is a poor place to be born into. Placed on day 28 the box is still clean when it is needed and the doe has three or four days to line it. Fill it about two thirds with clean hay or straw, put it exactly where you want it, and then leave it alone — moving a box after the kits are born is one of the standard triggers for a doe trampling or abandoning her litter.

A plain open-topped wooden box of roughly 30 × 45 × 25 cm (12 × 18 × 10 in) with a solid removable bottom works well. Avoid wire bottoms: the doe burrows down to kindle and wire is too cold for newborn kits. In the last day or two she will carry hay in her mouth and pull fur from her dewlap and flanks to line the nest — the most reliable late sign that kindling is imminent. If she has not pulled by the time the kits arrive, adding clean fur from another doe's nest is standard practice in cold weather. Remove the box 5 to 21 days after birth, once the kits climb in and out on their own.

Too early, too late: kits before day 29 and does past day 33

Kits delivered before about day 29 are premature in the physiological sense, not just the calendar sense. Lung maturation and thermoregulation finish in the last days of gestation, which is why laboratory models that deliberately deliver rabbits at day 28 and day 29 require controlled temperature, controlled humidity and hand-feeding to keep them alive — and still record higher mortality in the day 28 group than in the day 29 group. A nest box provides none of that support. A litter that arrives on day 27 or 28 in a rabbitry is usually lost, and the useful question becomes what caused the early delivery: a fright, a fall, a fight through the cage wire, heat stress or a genuine abortion.

At the other end, day 33 is where a doe stops being late and starts being a case. Veterinary guidance is specific: if a doe has not kindled by day 32, a veterinarian may induce parturition with oxytocin, because a litter delivered after day 34 is very often dead. The mechanism is unromantic. The kits keep growing while the placenta does not, and a single oversized kit is enough to obstruct the birth canal.

If a doe passes day 35 with nothing, treat it as a veterinary problem rather than a waiting game. Two explanations cover almost all cases. Either she was never pregnant — the more common of the two, and the reason a thirty-second palpation on day 12 pays for itself — or she is carrying a litter she cannot deliver, which is dystocia and needs a vet the same day. A doe who is straining without producing kits, sitting hunched, refusing feed or showing a discharge falls into the second category. Do not attempt to induce her yourself: oxytocin dosed wrongly or given against an obstruction makes a uterine rupture more likely, not less.

Pseudopregnancy: the 16 to 18 day false cycle

A doe who builds a nest, pulls fur and then produces nothing around day 17 or 18 was not pregnant — she was pseudopregnant. Rabbits are induced ovulators: they release eggs about 10 to 12 hours after mating rather than on a fixed oestrous cycle. Any stimulus strong enough to trigger that release will do it — a sterile mating with an infertile buck, a mating that simply failed to fertilise, or, most often in group housing, one doe mounting another.

The 16 to 18 day length is not arbitrary. Ovulation without fertilisation still leaves functioning corpora lutea on the ovary, and they still secrete progesterone, but in the rabbit they persist for only about half a gestation before regressing. FAO gives the resulting pseudopregnancy as 15 to 17 days; university extension guidance rounds it to about 17. What you observe is a complete nesting sequence running on a hormonal schedule with no fetuses behind it, ending abruptly when the corpora lutea fail.

There is a practical way to tell the two apart. Mississippi State Extension notes that the pseudopregnant doe builds her nest around 18 to 20 days after the stimulus and does not keep it clean, whereas a genuinely pregnant doe builds much later — in the last day or two before kindling — and keeps it tidy. The management response is straightforward: the end of a false cycle is a good moment to mate her properly, because she becomes receptive again immediately. Prevention is simpler still. House does so they cannot mount one another, and separate any that have been sharing space at least 18 to 20 days before you plan to breed.

After kindling: weaning and the next mating

The gestation chart does not end at kindling — it rolls straight into the next cycle. Check the nest within 48 hours of birth, count the kits born alive and dead and remove the dead. Those two numbers are the ones that decide, over two or three litters, whether a doe stays in the herd.

Weaning age depends on how hard you run the herd. Intensive systems wean at 28 to 32 days, Penn State Extension puts weaning at around 30 days, and a relaxed schedule leaves the kits with the doe until 42 to 55 days. Earlier weaning means more litters per doe per year, and a doe who needs more feed and more recovery between them. Later weaning means fewer, heavier kits and a doe who lasts longer in the herd. Neither is wrong; they are different businesses.

Rebreeding follows the same logic. Commercial producers rebreed 14 to 21 days after kindling; a 35-day interval is the usual recommendation for a herd meant to stay productive for years, yielding roughly five and a half litters per doe per year. A doe can conceive again on the day she gives birth, which matters if a buck shares her space — an accidental postpartum mating puts a second litter exactly 31 days behind the first. A good doe keeps producing full-sized litters for two to three years, and the only way to know which of yours are the good ones is to have the numbers written down.
