How to tell if a rabbit is pregnant
The only dependable way to confirm a rabbit pregnancy without veterinary equipment is abdominal palpation between 10 and 14 days after mating, when the developing kits can be felt through the belly wall as small, firm, evenly spaced nodules. Every other sign a breeder can observe — weight gain, nest building, fur pulling, a refused re-mating, a swelling abdomen — is suggestive rather than conclusive, and most of it arrives too late to change how you manage the doe.
Timing is what makes the distinction matter. Gestation runs about 31 to 33 days, so a sign that first appears at day 28 tells you something you needed three weeks earlier. An answer at day 12 lets you feed her accordingly, leave her undisturbed and book the nest box — or, if she is open, re-breed her at once.
Sort the signs into two groups. A diagnostic sign establishes pregnancy on its own: you felt kits, or an imaging device showed them. A suggestive sign shifts your confidence without settling anything, because something else — almost always pseudopregnancy — produces the same appearance.
- Ultrasound from day 6–8 — diagnostic, earliest of all methods, needs a clinic
- Palpation, days 10–14 — diagnostic in practised hands, free, the standard on most farms
- Radiography from about day 18–23 — diagnostic but late, once fetal bone has mineralised
- Weight gain — suggestive; needs a pre-breeding baseline, and expected gain varies by breed
- Nest building and fur pulling, days 27–31 — strongly suggestive but not diagnostic; pseudopregnant does do the same
- Appetite and temperament changes — weakly suggestive, with many other causes
- Refusing the buck on a test mating — unreliable in both directions
- Visible abdominal enlargement — only in the final week, too late to act on
Palpation at days 10–14: the one sign that actually proves it
Palpating the abdomen 10 to 14 days after mating is the standard method for detecting fetuses in a doe, and the window is narrow at both ends. Before day 10 the embryos are too small for most hands to distinguish from surrounding tissue. After day 14 they sink deeper and lose their outline; Mississippi State Extension notes that waiting beyond 14 days makes the task far harder and close to impossible. Skilled operators do better early: in a 2017 comparative study, palpation identified 28.57% of pregnancies on day 6 and reached 100% by day 9.
The technique is a light touch, never a squeeze. Set the doe on a non-slip surface facing you, feet down and settled, and steady her shoulders with one hand. Slide the other hand underneath, just ahead of the pelvis and between the hind legs, thumb on one side of the midline and fingers on the other. Let the hand close gently and draw it slowly backwards, so anything held in the uterine horns slips between thumb and fingers. Kits read as a row of small firm beads on each side, similar in size and regularly spaced. Faecal pellets, the classic false positive, sit further back and feel harder and irregular.
Never palpate a struggling doe: pressure on a tense abdomen can damage embryos, and rabbits have fine bones that snap easily. Does handled regularly are far easier to check. Treat positives and negatives asymmetrically — feeling kits confirms pregnancy, but failing to feel them may only mean your hands or her build got in the way, so record a failed check as unknown and repeat it in two or three days. Even a confident positive is not a guaranteed litter: FAO reports that only 60 to 70 percent of ova become live kits.
Weight gain: a supporting trend, not a test
Weight gain is what breeders reach for when they would rather not handle the doe, and it is the sign most often overstated. Utah State Extension reports does typically putting on 300 to 400 g (roughly 11 to 14 oz) across a pregnancy. The figure is not universal: the 2017 comparative study weighed Chinchilla does through gestation and recorded only about 90 g (roughly 3 oz) of total gain, concentrated in the first fortnight and then flat.
That spread is the problem. If the expected signal ranges from 90 g to 400 g depending on breed, a 150 g rise proves nothing on its own — it is equally consistent with a slightly richer week of feeding. To make it worth anything, weigh her on the day she is served, keep the ration unchanged, and use the same scale at the same time of day. Utah State also advises increasing feed 10 to 15 days before kindling, so a late gain may simply be the extra ration working.
This is the sign that depends most on record keeping, because it compares an animal against her own history rather than a breed average. Whether the numbers live in a notebook or a herd app such as RabbitBreeder, what makes an ambiguous reading usable is having the service date, the palpation result and a running weight series for that doe in one place.
Nest building and fur pulling around days 27–31
Nest building and fur pulling are the signs everyone recognises, and they arrive at the very end of gestation. Standard practice is to have the nest box in by day 28 after mating; the MSD Veterinary Manual gives day 28 to 29, Penn State Extension day 28. The doe then lines the nest with fur pulled from her own body, typically a day or so before kindling — in practice days 30 to 32 of a 31 to 33 day pregnancy. FAO describes the same sequence: she builds with her own fur plus whatever straw or shavings are to hand.
What you see is a doe carrying mouthfuls of hay into a corner or into the box, working it into a cup, then plucking fur from her belly, chest and dewlap to line it. The Rabbit Welfare Association describes exactly this pattern in unplanned litters. The bald patch underneath is normal at this stage, not a skin complaint, and it exposes the teats.
None of it is diagnostic. The behaviour is driven by the hormonal collapse at the end of a luteal phase, and a pseudopregnant doe has a luteal phase too — she will build and pull with no kits anywhere. Mississippi State Extension notes that a doe in false pregnancy attempts a nest roughly 18 to 20 days after the stimulating event, but does not keep it clean. So never wait for nesting before providing a box: if there is any chance she is pregnant, it goes in on day 28 regardless. A box provided late means kits born on wire.
Temperament and appetite changes
Breeders commonly report that a pregnant doe becomes less tolerant of handling in the last third of gestation — thumping more, grunting, turning territorial about her cage. The changes are real, but the extension literature does not treat them as diagnostic criteria, and for good reason: pain, illness, heat, a move to a new cage or simply an individual temperament all produce the same picture.
Appetite is more informative, mostly because of when it changes. Utah State Extension advises increasing feed 10 to 15 days before kindling, and intake usually rises through late gestation to meet that demand. The useful observation is the reversal — many does go noticeably off feed in the last day or two before kindling, which clusters tightly enough around the event to serve as a last-minute warning. That same drop is also a cardinal sign of gut stasis, so a doe who stops eating on day 20 is a veterinary question, not a pregnancy sign.
One housing note colours every behavioural read: a doe you are trying to assess should not be sharing a cage. Does housed together mount one another, which Mississippi State Extension identifies as the most common trigger for false pregnancy, with Utah State reporting the same.
Test mating: why a refused buck proves almost nothing
Test mating means returning the doe to a buck a week or two after service, on the theory that a pregnant doe will refuse him. Utah State Extension lists it among confirmation methods, noting that a buck may decline to mate a pregnant doe. It costs nothing and needs no skill. It also fails in three independent ways.
These are not edge cases — they are normal behaviour for the species. The pseudopregnancy problem alone is disqualifying: refusal is precisely what a non-pregnant doe on a false luteal phase does, and that phase lasts almost as long as the useful diagnostic window. Since palpation answers the same question at days 10 to 14 far more accurately, test mating is best treated as a legacy method.
None of this makes re-presenting a doe useless as a breeding decision. Michigan State Extension advises retrying a doe who refuses after two to four days, and standard practice is to take the doe to the buck, since a buck defending his own cage is where injuries happen.
- A pseudopregnant doe refuses too. False pregnancy lasts about 15 to 19 days, and Michigan State Extension states plainly that the doe will not breed during it.
- Receptivity varies in genuinely open does. FAO reports that a doe with a red vulva accepts mating and ovulates about 90 percent of the time, against only about 10 percent otherwise.
- Acceptance does not clear her either. A pregnant doe may still stand for a buck, so a service adds handling stress and fight risk for no diagnostic gain.
Abdominal enlargement and the stages you can actually observe
A visibly enlarged abdomen is a last-week sign and nearly worthless as a test. The reason is developmental: until roughly the midpoint of gestation, around day 15, there is comparatively little increase in the size of the doe's reproductive organs or of the embryos, and growth then accelerates sharply. By the time her flanks are obviously distended, she is within days of kindling.
Laid out against the calendar, the observable stages of a rabbit pregnancy look like this.
One date deserves particular attention. The MSD Veterinary Manual notes that a doe who has not kindled by day 32 may need veterinary intervention to induce labour, because a litter delivered after day 34 is commonly dead. A doe who has sailed past her due date with a full nest and no kits is not a wait-and-see situation.
- Days 0–5: nothing detectable by hand, and too early for reliable imaging
- Days 6–8: embryonic vesicles visible on ultrasound — about 8 mm across on day 8, 12 mm on day 9, 17 mm on day 10
- Days 10–14: kits palpable through the abdominal wall as firm nodules — the on-farm window
- From about day 15: fetal and uterine growth accelerate sharply
- Day 18: fetal ossification and heartbeat detectable on ultrasound
- Day 23: a clear outline of fetal skeletons visible on imaging
- Day 28–29: nest box goes in
- Days 30–32: nest built, fur pulled, appetite often drops
- Days 31–33: kindling; past day 32 with no litter, call a vet
Pseudopregnancy: a nest with no kits in it
Pseudopregnancy, or false pregnancy, is a hormonal state in which a doe carrying nothing behaves as though she is: she builds a nest, pulls belly fur, develops mammary tissue and may defend her corner. Rabbits are induced ovulators, so any sufficient stimulus triggers it — an infertile mating, contact with a buck, or one doe mounting another, which Mississippi State Extension names as the most common cause.
The tell is arithmetic, not observation. A pseudopregnancy runs roughly 15 to 19 days — FAO gives 15 to 17, Michigan State and the Utah State producers' guide about 17 — roughly half a real gestation. The nest therefore appears around two and a half weeks after the mount, whereas a true pregnancy puts nesting at days 27 to 31. Mississippi State adds a qualitative marker: the false-pregnant doe attempts a nest around days 18 to 20, but does not keep it clean.
The condition is self-limiting and generally harmless. The doe returns to receptivity when it ends, which Mississippi State treats as a good moment to breed her properly; the same guidance recommends separating does at least 18 to 20 days before mating.
Because the distinction rests on counting days, it depends entirely on whether the mating date was written down at the time. What a vet can offer: ultrasound and radiography
Ultrasound is the earliest and most certain answer available, and the main reason to involve a veterinarian. Ypsilantis and Saratsis, in World Rabbit Science, examined artificially inseminated New Zealand White does on days 7 through 10: a low-echogenicity area in the uterine lumen on day 7 indicated pregnancy, and embryonic vesicles were countable at about 8 mm across on day 8, 12 mm on day 9, and 17 mm on day 10. The 2017 comparative study went earlier still, reporting 100 percent correct ultrasound diagnosis on day 6 against 28.57 percent for palpation the same day.
A scan also does what no hand can: it counts vesicles rather than estimating them, and as gestation advances it shows whether the litter is alive. The Nigerian Veterinary Journal study describes vesicles first seen on day 7, embryo and placenta distinguishable by day 12, and bony formation, vertebral column and fetal heart rate visible later on. Radiography has a different window, because X-rays depend on mineralised bone and cannot answer the early question at all. Ossification becomes detectable from about day 18 and fetal skeletons show a clear outline by about day 23 — making radiography a tool for counting kits before a difficult kindling, or assessing a doe past day 32, not a pregnancy test.
For most small breeders the higher-value investment is learning to palpate well: it is free, repeatable and lands inside the useful window. Imaging earns its cost for valuable animals, for does with a poor reproductive history, and wherever an early definite answer would change management. Book it with a practice that sees rabbits routinely.

How can I tell if a rabbit is pregnant without palpating?
Honestly, you cannot get a reliable answer without palpation or imaging. The hands-off signs — weight gain, appetite, temperament, nest building, a refused re-mating — are all suggestive, and most appear after day 27, too late to be useful. My rabbit is pulling out her fur — does that mean she is pregnant?
Not on its own. Count the days from the mating. Fur pulling at days 27 to 31 fits a true pregnancy, since does normally line the nest a day or two before kindling. Fur pulling around days 16 to 20 after a mating or a mount points to false pregnancy instead, and Mississippi State Extension notes the false-pregnant doe typically builds an untidy nest she does not maintain. Either way, if there is any chance she is pregnant, give her the nest box and leave her alone.
My doe built a nest but never had kits. What happened?
Most often that is pseudopregnancy. Rabbits ovulate in response to mating, so an infertile service, contact with a buck or another doe mounting her can trigger a luteal phase that produces full nesting behaviour with no litter. It runs about 15 to 19 days and resolves by itself, after which she becomes receptive again and can be bred. The other possibility is early embryonic loss — FAO reports that only 60 to 70 percent of ova become live kits — which is why a positive palpation at day 12 is not an absolute guarantee of a litter at day 31.
Is my rabbit pregnant or just getting fat?
This is exactly what palpation resolves, because the two feel entirely different.
