The short answer: feed it nothing
Feed a wild rabbit nothing. A cottontail sitting on your lawn is not waiting for help — it is a grazing specialist standing in the middle of its own food supply, and the wildlife agencies that have examined the question ask the public not to put food out for wild mammals at all. Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources puts it flatly: do not feed wild animals human food items, because non-natural food is likely to cause more harm than benefit.
That answer disappoints people, so it is worth saying why it holds. The Pennsylvania Game Commission's objection is not that the food is poisonous but that artificial feeding sites pull animals into small areas, where disease moves between them through respiratory droplets, saliva, faeces and urine. Washington's Department of Fish and Wildlife adds that concentrating animals makes them easier for predators to find, and that grain and fruit are not part of a wild herbivore's normal diet.
There is a second problem with most advice returned for this question: it is written for pet rabbits. The animal in a North American garden is usually an eastern cottontail, Sylvilagus floridanus. The animal in a European field is usually a brown hare, Lepus europaeus, or a wild European rabbit. A house or farm rabbit is Oryctolagus cuniculus, domesticated from wild European rabbits in monasteries in southern France roughly 1,400 years ago. These are not interchangeable animals, and a feeding list built for the last of them is not evidence about the first two.
What wild rabbits actually eat, season by season
The eastern cottontail's diet is broad and almost entirely wild-sourced. Through spring, summer and autumn it is dominated by grasses — orchard grass, timothy, redtop, bluegrasses, ordinary lawn grass — with white clover, wild strawberry, dandelion, sedges and fruit alongside. In winter the same animal switches to woody material: buds, branch tips and the bark of blackberry, raspberry, sumac, apple, oak, dogwood, maple, birch and willow. Given the chance it also helps itself to beans, peas, lettuce and cabbage from a vegetable plot, which is how most people meet one.
That switch is possible because a rabbit is a hindgut fermenter: a non-ruminant herbivore with an enlarged caecum full of bacteria that break down fibre the animal cannot digest itself. In an adult the caecum holds roughly 100–120 g of a pasty mixture at about 20 percent dry matter, and material stays there between 2 and 12 hours. Rabbits then eat the soft caecal pellets straight from the anus — caecotrophy — recovering microbial protein, the full set of B vitamins and volatile fatty acids.
The consequence matters more than the mechanism. That bacterial population is tuned to whatever the animal has eaten over the past several days, and it is what stands between the rabbit and a gut infection. Fibre also does mechanical work, the "scratch factor" that keeps the gut moving: particles larger than about 0.5 mm are excreted as hard pellets, while particles under about 0.3 mm ferment in the caecum. Low-fibre food lets undesirable bacteria establish. Wild forage is high in fibre by definition; almost nothing a householder offers is. Cottontails do not even need a water dish — the water in what they eat covers their requirement.
- Spring to autumn: grasses (orchard grass, timothy, redtop, bluegrasses, lawn grass), white clover, dandelion, wild strawberry, sedges, fruit.
- Winter: buds, branch tips and bark of blackberry, raspberry, sumac, witch-hazel, apple, black cherry, oak, dogwood, maple, birch, willow.
- Opportunistic: garden beans, peas, lettuce and cabbage, plus oats, winter wheat, clover, alfalfa and waste grain from farmland.
- Water: met through daily food intake, not from standing water.
What harms: bread, cereal, muesli and anything sudden
The damage from garden feeding is rarely a poisoning. It is a fermentation accident. Starch that escapes digestion in the small intestine arrives in the caecum and becomes substrate for pathogenic bacteria, in particular Clostridium spiroforme, which produces a potent iota toxin. The resulting enterotoxaemia can kill within 48 hours; an animal that looked normal in the evening is found dead in the morning. It is seen less often on high-fibre diets, and the young are hit hardest — the classic picture is rabbits four to eight weeks old.
Bread, breakfast cereal, crackers, muesli-type rabbit mixes, corn and sweetened treats are all concentrated starch or sugar in a form no wild lagomorph encounters. The Pennsylvania Game Commission notes that supplemental feed such as cracked corn cannot replace natural forage and can cause fatal conditions including lactic acidosis. Washington's wildlife department is blunter: fruit and grain are extremely difficult for a wild herbivore to digest.
Green food is not automatically safe either, because the problem is the change rather than the item. A rabbit that has spent a fortnight on winter browse has a caecal flora built for winter browse; a bowl of supermarket lettuce or a pile of root vegetables is a different substrate arriving all at once. The Rabbit Welfare Association's rule for pet rabbits — vary the plants, keep portions of any one plant small — exists precisely because abrupt volume causes trouble, and it applies with more force to an animal nobody can monitor afterwards. Lawn clippings are the worst single offering: they ferment very quickly and can be extremely harmful.
- Bread, crackers and breakfast cereal — concentrated starch, no useful fibre.
- Muesli-style mixes and grain — allow selective feeding and load the caecum with starch.
- Corn, sweet treats and fruit in quantity — linked to lactic acidosis in fed wildlife.
- Root vegetables and large volumes of greens — a sudden substrate change rather than a toxin.
- Lawn clippings — ferment very quickly and can be extremely harmful.
- Cow's milk and milk-soaked bread — neonates need species-appropriate formula from a rehabilitator.
Winter: what changes, and why the answer is still nothing
"What to feed a wild rabbit in winter" is the version of this question people ask with most conviction, usually after snow has covered the grass. The premise is wrong. Cottontails are active year-round throughout their range, and their winter diet is not an emergency ration but the normal seasonal one: buds, twig tips and bark, supplemented with oats, winter wheat, clover and any green material still standing. Habitat surveys note that winter requirements differ very little from summer ones, because what the animal needs in both seasons is dense cover next to open foraging ground.
Winter feeding also creates an obligation you may not want. Washington's guidance is explicit that once you start, feeding has to continue until the animals can adjust back to natural food in spring; an abrupt stop in February leaves an animal that has reorganised its movements around your garden with neither your food nor a familiar foraging route. The digestive objection is sharpest in winter too, when the caecal flora is adapted to woody browse.
If you want to do something for rabbits in winter, do it with habitat rather than food. The limiting resource for cottontails is cover, not calories: the continued loss of nesting, escape and resting cover is described as the largest threat to the species' future, and brush piles of logs and loose branches beside hedgerows or dense grass provide exactly that. Placement matters — an isolated pile far from other cover concentrates prey where predators can work it.
Feeding stations, habituation and predation
A regular feeding point does three things, none of them good. It concentrates animals that would otherwise be dispersed, and concentration is how wildlife disease spreads — through respiratory droplets, saliva, faeces and urine exchanged at a shared food source. It makes those animals predictable, and predictable prey is easy prey: agencies list increased vulnerability to predation and poaching among the standard consequences of feeding. And it habituates them, so that they associate people with food.
For a rabbit, habituation is not a minor behavioural quirk. Cottontail biology is built around not being predictable — a home range of ten acres (about four hectares) or less, movements that seldom exceed half a mile (roughly 800 m) a day, and annual mortality that can reach 80 percent, offset by as many as seven litters in a season. An animal that reports to a dish at a fixed time has surrendered its only defence.
Overbrowsing is the quieter cost. Continually feeding and congregating wildlife reduces the value of the surrounding habitat for everything else living in it, and can increase predation on other species sharing the ground. If a rabbit visits your garden regularly, it has already found what it needs there. A feeder does not add habitat; it moves risk.
Disease travels both ways: RHDV2, myxomatosis and tularaemia
If you keep rabbits, this section concerns you directly, because a garden feeding station is an interface between wild and domestic populations. Rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus 2 is the clearest case. Between March 2020 and March 2024, 916 wild lagomorphs were tested in the United States and 313 — 34.2 percent — were positive for RHDV2 by RT-qPCR, across eight native North American species including the endangered pygmy rabbit and riparian brush rabbit. Sequencing found similarities between viruses from domestic and wild animals sharing an area, which is what cross-species transmission looks like in the data.
The virus is unusually durable outside a host: extension guidance reports viability of 22–35 days at 22°C (72°F), 3–7 days at 37°C (99°F), survival through freeze–thaw cycles, and detection in a dry state for as long as 105 days. It moves on feeders, water crocks, cages and carriers, on shoes and clothing, in manure and bedding, and on contaminated feed and water, with rodents, insects and birds as mechanical vectors. Survivors may shed for four to six weeks. In classical RHD, morbidity is often 100 percent and mortality 60–90 percent.
Myxomatosis divides the genera sharply, which itself illustrates why wild and domestic rabbits should not be treated as one animal. All breeds of domesticated rabbit are susceptible; cottontails and jackrabbits are comparatively resistant, and the California brush rabbit is the reservoir along the coast of California and Oregon. Transmission is by mosquitoes, fleas, biting flies and direct contact, and losses in a rabbitry may run from 25 to 90 percent.
There is a human-health side too. Cottontails carry tularaemia more often than any other wildlife species, and up to 90 percent of human tularaemia cases are linked to wild lagomorph exposure. Lethargic wild rabbits should not be handled — reason enough to keep the interaction at a distance rather than at a food bowl.
- Do not feed grass, greens or cut forage gathered where wild rabbits graze to your own rabbits.
- Do not use branches or gathered forage as bedding or enrichment for domestic stock.
- Exclude wild and feral rabbits from the rabbitry and from feed and bedding stores.
- Change footwear and wash hands between wild-rabbit areas and your animals; the virus travels on shoes and clothing.
- Do not handle a lethargic or dead wild rabbit bare-handed, and report unexplained wild die-offs to your wildlife authority.
When it is a nest, and when it is genuinely an orphan
Most "orphans" are not orphans. A cottontail nest is a shallow depression lined with grass and fur, and the doe deliberately stays away from it: she rests and feeds in nearby cover by day and returns at dawn and dusk to nurse. Wisconsin's guidance gives a usable field test for older young — a cottontail about the size of a softball, roughly 10–13 cm (4–5 in) long, with open eyes and ears held upright, is capable of being on its own and should be left alone. Weaning happens at around 16 to 21 days, though it may extend to about five weeks.
European hares are a further step removed from anything a pet-rabbit page describes. Leverets are precocial — born furred with their eyes open — and the doe visits once a day, gathering the litter about two hours after sunset for an average three-minute suckle before they scatter back to separate hiding places. That continues until weaning in the fifth week, with no other parental care at all. A leveret sitting motionless and alone in a field in daylight is behaving exactly as it should.
The outcome data are grim enough to state plainly. Across 2,765 brown hare leverets admitted to 34 Czech rescue centres between 2010 and 2019, 32.4 percent were released, 40.8 percent died, 19.6 percent ended in permanent captivity and 3.3 percent were euthanised — only around one in three healthy young hares admitted is reared successfully. Nearly half were admitted as "orphaned" and almost a fifth were recorded as caught needlessly. The authors are direct: young animals taken needlessly to rescue centres may harm the population.
Intervention by the finder measurably worsens the odds. Among 1,256 orphaned eastern cottontails presented to a university wildlife clinic over six years, animals were significantly more likely to be non-survivors if they had received treatment before arrival (P=0.031), alongside arriving as singletons or with neurological or multi-organ signs. Feeding a wild kit yourself is not a neutral act while you look for help.
- Cottontail kit: altricial, born blind and furless in a fur-lined ground nest; nursed at dawn and dusk; weaned about 16–21 days.
- Independent cottontail: softball-sized, about 10–13 cm (4–5 in), eyes open, ears upright — leave it alone.
- Hare leveret: precocial, born furred with eyes open; nursed once a day about two hours after sunset; weaned in the fifth week.
- Domestic kit: Oryctolagus cuniculus, weaned at roughly four to six weeks under human management, on different milk.
- Genuine orphan: parent confirmed dead, or the animal bleeding, attacked, emaciated, chilled or fly-blown — a rehabilitator case.
The legal position, and how to find a rehabilitator
Keeping a wild rabbit is usually illegal, and the reason is not bureaucratic obstruction. Most wild animals are protected under state and federal law and cannot be taken from the wild or possessed by unauthorised citizens; veterinary guidance says the same, that permits are required — even for veterinarians — to care for most wild species beyond initial medical care. In several jurisdictions someone who has picked up an animal may not hold it more than 24 hours before transferring it. European systems work through an equivalent network of licensed rescue centres, of the kind that handled those 2,765 Czech leverets.
The practical instruction from the agencies is short: never attempt to rehabilitate wildlife on your own. Contact a licensed rehabilitator if the young animal's parent is known to be dead, or the animal has been attacked, is bleeding, appears emaciated, has diarrhoea, or shows fly eggs or maggots. Otherwise watch from a distance and let the doe do her job.
While you wait for advice, the sequence matters more than the substance. Hypothermia and dehydration must be corrected before a neonatal mammal is fed anything at all; feeding a cold or dry animal, or overfeeding it, causes regurgitation, aspiration pneumonia and diarrhoea. Rehabilitators build milk replacer up in stages, from oral electrolyte solution through quarter, half and three-quarter strength — not something to improvise in a kitchen. That is the concrete reason the standard advice is to offer nothing, including water, until you have spoken to someone qualified. Your wildlife agency publishes a list of permitted rehabilitators; in continental Europe, ask for the regional wildlife rescue station. Make the call before you make a decision about food.
